Abstract

With the introduction of a new dispensation, the South African labour market changed irrevocably. Companies had to find ways to comply with new legislation, without losing their competitiveness. Against this background, the focus fell on work teams as a possible means of coping with new challenges. The security industry was selected, as work teams form the basis of their operational success, with Securicor Gray being selected as a company, because it is one of the main role players in the South African security industry. The possible influence of diversity was investigated, as work teams consist of culturally diverse team members. The role of the team leader was examined by means of the leadership model of Hersey & Blanchard. Attention was also focused on training and its possible impact on team members.
