Abstract

This dissertation examines the artist's fixation on selected aspects which inhibits creativity. It will be determined how and under which circumstances fixation acts as a creative block in the Fine arts. This fixation, as well as the causes thereof, will be identified and examined. The main aim of this research is to supply the artist with a guide with which he/she can identify fixation as creative block in his/her own approach to creativity, as well as the causes thereof. Previous experience as developmental grounds for fixation and mental set is of primary importance. Fixation in relation to the social and cultural context in which creativity is practised, will also be examined. The way in which these aspects inhibits creativity in the Fine arts, as well as the way in which it causes fixation, will be pointed out. The practical component of this study consist of eight paintings done in oil colours. The final exhibition will consist of twelve to sixteen completed works. The theoretical research will be applied to my own work and approach to creativity, with the purpose to identify any fixation therein.
