In the pursuit of infrastructural development, Lesotho has made substantial investments, with a particular emphasis on road construction. However, to optimise the returns on these investments, it is imperative to mitigate the prevalent issue of schedule overruns in infrastructure projects. This study is primarily aimed at scrutinising the risk factors that exert influence on the schedules of infrastructure projects and at proposing efficacious strategies and control measures to alleviate the detrimental effects of these risks. The research methodology employed in this study is a mixed-method design, specifically an explanatory sequential design. The data collection process was multifaceted, encompassing questionnaires that collected the viewpoints of seventy-five respondents, semi-structured interviews, and an exhaustive review of relevant literature. On the other hand, the viewpoints about risk mitigation strategies were collected from five interviewees comprising quantity surveyors, project manager, an architect and structural engineer. The analysis of the quantitative data was conducted using regression with mediation, while the qualitative data derived from the interviews was subjected to thematic analysis. To ensure the reliability and validity of the quantitative data, several measures were taken, including the application of Cronbach's Alpha and Confirmatory factor analysis for construct validity. The results derived from the quantitative data analysis revealed that certain factors, such as financial considerations, design aspects, ownership issues, and government-related risks, do not have a significant direct impact on the schedules of government infrastructure projects. However, insights gleaned from the literature review suggested that the successful completion of these projects could be facilitated through the deployment of skilled construction professionals, the implementation of effective planning and scheduling strategies, and the formation of knowledgeable project teams, among other factors. In conclusion, the study puts forth several risk mitigation strategies and practices, which were informed by the insights provided by experienced construction professionals. These strategies include joint risk assessment, the use of insurance premiums, leveraging the experience of contractors, and promoting effective communication among all stakeholders.
