Leadership in schools has been a primary cause for concern, not only in developing countries but also on a global level. The role of instructional leaders is viewed as a key element for the improvement of the school worldwide, as they are responsible for the success of their schools. Hence, through a qualitative approach, this study sought to investigate the role of female instructional leadership in the enhancement of learners’ academic achievement at high schools in Lesotho and South Africa. Alternatively, the qualitative approach was used to explore the level of knowledge and experience of participants, of the role of female instructional leadership in learners’ academic achievement in high schools. A sample of twenty participants, comprising ten school female principals was interviewed, while ten male and female heads of department were given an open-ended questionnaire. They were both asked to give their perceptions of the role of female principals. The sample was purposely selected as it was considered to be information rich. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with the principals. An open-ended questionnaire was given to the heads of department. All interviews were conducted on the school premises. Data were analysed through the use of a thematic approach. The results of the study indicated that the female principals are fully aware that it is their role to influence educators to work in a manner that learners succeed in their learning. Female school leaders can influence educators and learners to collaborate in teaching and learning. This enables them to work towards a common goal, that is, learners’ academic achievement. The results showed that in almost all the schools, female principals are excellent at managing the daily instruction process. Due to their quality traits, female leaders work hard to ensure that learners achieve success, that is, to complete secondary school level in a way that allows them to pursue their studies in the colleges and universities of their choice. The study recommends that female educators be given high positions in leadership in the field of education because they can demonstrate their leadership traits that help them become excellent leaders. The female leaders also need to be given a good salary as a motivation in the hard work they perform daily.
