Text editing is undertaken by different persons with varying educational backgrounds. Which universal principles/standards/norms are then applicable to text editing? A key norm proposed by the researcher for all norms in the practice of text editing is that the text editor (and thus the action of text editing) must contribute to the successful communication of the intended meaning between the writer of the text and the reader of the text. A norm should also allow for deviations. Linguistics not only differentiates between right and wrong; text/utterances are also classified m terms of acceptable/unacceptable. The text editor must therefore be mindful of the fact that, although certain texts do deviate (language deviations) from the prescribed norm (for example, standard language) such text may still be acceptable within a certain context/situation, simply because it contributes to the communication process. Pragmatics deals with the interpretation of expressions in context. As is evident from the study of intended, implicit and presupposed meaning, context plays an important (defming) role in the interpretation of expressions. The text editor must also pay attention to cohesion and coherence links within text. Semantics is the study of the meaning of words or expressions. Meaning is created by each individual, with due consideration and application of the conventional nature of language. The conventional nature of language leads one to the conclusion that there is common knowledge as to the meaning of words (as signs/symbols of meaning). The test editor must be sure to respect these conventions in language in order to promote effective communication. Through experience the text editor not only develops his skills, but also gams knowledge that supplements his professional expertise. Although supply is relatively limited in South Africa, international manuals on practical text editing/proofreading are quite readily available. Several different models or sets of proofreading/text editing marks are available, from which the text editor may exercise a choice(s). The text editor will then apply his chosen model(s) in a uniform manner. Within the ( profession of text editing it is very important to consider ethical norms. By means of, for example, recognition of the text writer's own writing style, as well as continuous professional development and the application of strict standards, the text editor must make a professional contribution to the text he is editing.en_US
