Abstract
Road transportation is critical in providing individuals with access to a variety of socioeconomic activities, including business, education, employment, recreation and healthcare, particularly in cities. However, population growth, socio-economic activity as well as subsequent urban functions, and increased vehicular travel, have produced long term mobility issues in cities. The scenario of such difficulties in South African cities seem quite significant. Given this, there are claims that widespread utilisation of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in travel as well as socio-economic pursuits could greatly reduce road transportation and traffic related issues while also promoting sustainable road transportation. As a result, the research investigated ways in which ICT could provide solutions to improve the road transportation system and promote sustainable road traffic movement in South African urban areas. The research used Mthatha, a town in Eastern Cape, South Africa as the subject of the study. The research included data from primary sources, such as road user surveys and a transport characteristic survey conducted using a random sample technique, as well as secondary sources, like published and unpublished statistical information accessed through credible sources. Quantitative statistical analysis and empirical studies have been used to investigate the state of sustainable transport characteristics such as mobility, ICT use, congestion, travel time delay and speed variations. The results revealed that ICT integration and efficient utilisation will minimise the need for travel, minimise traffic volume, as well as allow for optimal route planning, potentially helping to decrease traffic congestion, trip distance and journey time in the town.
